Course Description

This course provides foundational knowledge in clinical laboratory medicine, emphasising the principles and practices essential to accurate diagnostic testing. It covers key disciplines including haematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, and immunology, with a focus on specimen collection, laboratory safety, analytical techniques, and result interpretation. Through integrated theoretical instruction and practical demonstrations, the course aims to develop competence in recognising normal and abnormal laboratory findings, understanding their clinical implications, and applying quality assurance measures. This curriculum is designed to support early healthcare learners and professionals in acquiring the essential skills required for effective laboratory-based diagnostic decision-making.

Course Objectives

Upon completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the role of clinical laboratory testing in the diagnostic process.
  2. Interpret common laboratory test results and correlate them with clinical findings.
  3. Describe principles, methods, and clinical applications in haematology and microbiology.
  4. Apply basic knowledge of specimen collection, processing, and safety protocols.
  5. Recognise limitations and potential sources of error in laboratory testing.

Course Outcomes

Learners will be able to:

  • Define standard laboratory parameters and reference ranges.
  • Differentiate normal from pathological laboratory values.
  • Analyse haematological and microbiological test reports in clinical scenarios.
  • Demonstrate correct specimen collection and handling procedures.
  • Evaluate the appropriateness and reliability of laboratory results in clinical contexts.
