Course Description:

The Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) course offers a comprehensive exploration of principles, protocols, and practices designed to minimise the risk of healthcare-associated infections. Emphasis is placed on standard and transmission-based precautions, environmental and equipment hygiene, outbreak containment strategies, and hospital policy compliance. The course integrates theoretical knowledge with practical skills to prepare learners for effective implementation of IPC measures in clinical and public health settings, aligning with national and global safety standards.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, learners will be able to:

  1. Explain the scientific foundations and significance of infection prevention and control in healthcare settings.
  2. Describe the classifications, indications, and correct usage of standard and transmission-based precautions.
  3. Demonstrate the application of IPC practices including hand hygiene, use of personal protective equipment (PPE), and aseptic techniques.
  4. Evaluate the effectiveness of hospital IPC protocols through audit tools and surveillance data.
  5. Develop outbreak response plans incorporating risk assessment, containment strategies, and staff training.

Course Outcomes

Upon successful completion of the course, learners will be able to:

  1. Define key terminologies and concepts related to infection prevention and control.
  2. Illustrate appropriate implementation of transmission-based precautions in clinical scenarios.
  3. Apply IPC protocols to routine and high-risk procedures in healthcare environments.
  4. Critique institutional IPC measures based on outcome indicators and compliance reports.
  5. Design tailored IPC interventions for outbreak management and policy development.
