Course Description

This course provides a structured and clinically relevant foundation in the diagnosis, management, and referral of common dermatological conditions encountered in primary care. It equips healthcare professionals with essential skills in clinical assessment, use of dermatological procedures, application of topical therapies, and identification of red flag presentations requiring specialist referral. Emphasis is placed on practical, evidence-based approaches, including lesion description, patient education, and interpretation of biopsy results. The course is designed to enhance diagnostic accuracy, optimise patient care, and support timely and effective dermatology referrals within the primary care setting.

Course Objectives

  1. Describe the anatomy and functions of the skin and its relevance to dermatological presentations in primary care.
  2. Demonstrate the ability to conduct a thorough dermatological history and physical examination.
  3. Apply clinical reasoning to diagnose and manage common inflammatory, infectious, and pigmentary skin disorders.
  4. Distinguish dermatological conditions that require urgent or specialist referral based on red flag criteria.
  5. Perform and document basic dermatological procedures such as punch biopsies and wound care.

Course Outcomes

  1. Explain the structural and functional components of the skin and their implications in disease processes.
  2. Conduct accurate dermatological assessments incorporating morphology, distribution, and configuration of lesions.
  3. Interpret clinical findings to develop management plans for prevalent skin conditions encountered in general practice.
