Description

The course gives an overview of the evolving of the global health landscape. Potent forces of globalisation, demographic changes and emergent diseases make the agenda for health for the new millennium very challenging.

This course introduces the students to global health terminology used in the field in line with priorities of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2030. Course contents are designed to advance the understanding on Global Health in particular:

  • Universal health coverage for 2030 sustainable development: to ensure equity and the right to health for all.
  • Ongoing global health crises: to save lives and defeat major epidemics.
  • Prevention and responses to global health threats: to provide fast and effective international interventions.

Students explore current global health issues and get acquainted with the Global Health Observatory (GHO), an initiative of the World Health Organisation to share data on global health, including statistics by country and information about specific diseases and health measures.

Career prospects

The career opportunities in Global Health and Disaster Management re often divided into clinical and non-clinical with opportunities in both addressing issues of public/global health and epidemiology, or work in leadership roles abroad and with agencies such as UNICEF and the World Health Organisation.  Non-clinical graduates can hold valuable positions addressing nutrition, policy development for infectious diseases and health care management
