Course Description

This course is designed to equip the student with advanced knowledge in the application of descriptive and   inferential   statistics   in   public   health.   The   focus   will   be   on need and uses of statistics in public health and medicine. Specific topics include, concept of the variables, graphical and diagrammatical presentations of various data, measures of central tendency, measures of dispersion, basic probability concepts and distribution, testing of hypothesis for single and two means and proportion, Analysis of variance. This course also emphasizes on the importance of correlation, correlation coefficient and regression (linear, logistic and other non nonlinear) in analyzing public health data. The importance of data reduction and application of principal component analysis also included. This course will help students to develop advanced skills in analyzing and interpreting data from Health, Allied Health, Public Health settings.

Course Objectives

  • Classify the variables into nominal, ordinal, discrete and continuous.
  • Describe basic concepts of probability, random variation and commonly used statistical probability distributions.
  • Interpret the descriptive statistics, inferential statistics, correlation coefficient and regression from a given data
  • Apply descriptive and inferential methodologies according to the type of study design for answering a particular research question.
  • Perform descriptive and inferential statistics from a given data using statistical software

Course Outcomes

  • Demonstrate knowledge of the concepts of variables to apply in various situation.
  • Demonstrate specialized knowledge of the concepts of probability, probability distributions and the application of principles of probability in decision making process.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of application of descriptive and inferential statistics.
  • Apply descriptive and inferential statistics according to the type of study design for answering a particular research question.
